The Huntsville Hurricanes U19 Boys’ basketball team had an awesome performance, said Coach Kelly Picken, when they participated in the Ontario Cup Provincial Tournament on May 26-28 in Kingston.
The Hurricanes played five Division 5 games in total and came away with a 5 and 0 win/loss record along with the gold medal win!
On Friday, May 26, the boys played against MUMBA Kornet, starting the weekend off with a clear win 68-44. Saturday, the team met St. Mary’s first thing and won for a second time scoring 63 points to their opponents’ 53. Later that day, the Hurricanes took to the court to win yet another game against York North Condarcuri 64-45.
On Sunday, the boys faced off against the Peterborough Power with their fourth win 63-45 that secured them a spot in the gold medal game.
In the finals, Huntsville competed against York North Condarcuri with another tremendous and final win 64-43 for the gold.
Coach Picken shared the teams’ strategy to win: “playing tough defense which always translates to a better offense. Our full-court press really rattled the other teams and at one point, in the final gold medal game, the Hurricanes scored ten points in just a few moments as we stole the ball in our defensive end five times in a row.”
The top scorers over the weekend were Tommy Giblin, Bronson Boyko, Takiah Ebbs-Picken and David Gordier. The entire team played whole heartedly with intensity and focus.
The U19 Hurricane boys, with players from three different high schools, played together when it counted the most.
“In our final tournament, the boys came to play as a very cohesive unit and were complimented on their sportsmanship and discipline on the court,” said Picken.
Well done on such a successful season, boys!
