A stop for directions south of Novar ends badly for Etobicoke man

What may have started off as a joyride ended very poorly for an Etobicoke man when he entered an MTO inspection station looking for directions.

At approximately 8:20 p.m. on Wednesday, April 27, 2016, Almaguin Highlands OPP were conducting a joint initiative with the Ministry of Transportation (MTO) at the Highway 11 inspection station south of Novar.

Officers were assisting the MTO with commercial motor vehicle inspections when a vehicle entered the inspection station looking for directions. The officer suspected the driver had been drinking alcohol when the suspect drove off southbound on Highway 11. OPP attempted to stop the driver, but he took the North Waseosa Lake Road exit and failed to stop at a stop sign, rolling the vehicle into the ditch. The driver of the vehicle was not injured and the officer arrested him for impaired operation of a vehicle.

James Livingston, 34, of Etobicoke was charged with the following offences:
• Driving while ability impaired – motor vehicle, contrary to section 253(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC)
• Driving with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in blood, contrary to section 253(1)(b) of the CC
• Flight while pursued by police officer, contrary to section 249.1(1) of the CC
• Drive motor vehicle with open container of liquor, contrary to section 32(1) of the Liquor Licence Act (LLA)
• Disobey stop sign, contrary to section 136(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA)

The accused was released from police custody and is to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Wednesday, June 15, 2016 in Huntsville.
