A quarter-century of care: Home Comfort Care founder Bonnie Smith built a business on compassion and community

For 28 years, Bonnie Smith has been helping people maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life through personalized care and practical solutions.

As founder and owner of Home Comfort Care Services Inc., Smith has grown a business that began in her home into a regional operation with locations in Gravenhurst, Huntsville, Bracebridge and Parry Sound. Yet despite the growth, she says the philosophy that guided her from the beginning remains unchanged: treat every client as an individual.

Smith launched the business in 2001, initially focusing on helping people find specialized products for medical concerns such as mastectomies, incontinence and compression therapy.

“These are a lot of the things that a lot of our competitors do not focus on because it is a lot more time-consuming, but we offer one-on-one service because everybody is different,” she said.

What started as a home-based operation quickly expanded as clients sought assistance with mobility challenges and accessibility needs. Today, Home Comfort Care provides everything from walkers and wheelchairs to scooters, power chairs, stair lifts, grab bars and customized accessibility solutions.

The company opened its first storefront in Gravenhurst in 2015, followed by Huntsville a year later. Smith said a devastating family tragedy prompted her to immerse herself in work, eventually leading to the opening of locations in Bracebridge and, four years ago, in Parry Sound.

“It’s been quite the journey. We’ve helped a lot of people,” she said.

The business remains a family affair, with Smith working alongside her husband, son and a team of dedicated staff. She credits their success to a commitment to service that extends well beyond selling equipment.

Much of the work, she explained, involves helping clients understand funding programs, tax credits and support services that can offset the cost of equipment.

“We actually help navigate through those channels to get them the equipment that they need,” Smith said.

Her husband serves as the company’s lead service technician, handling installations for accessibility equipment such as handrails, grab bars, stair lifts and patient support lifts.

Beyond serving customers, Smith says supporting her staff is equally important.

“Anyone I hire, they don’t work for us, they work with us,” she said. “We are family-owned and oriented. I let everybody know that just because I sign your paycheck doesn’t mean that you’re any different from me.”

That people-first philosophy also shapes how Home Comfort Care interacts with clients. Smith rejects what she describes as a cookie-cutter corporate approach, emphasizing the importance of maintaining relationships and open communication long after a purchase has been made.

The company is also deeply connected to the communities it serves, regularly donating equipment and support to those facing financial hardship and partnering with local organizations whenever possible.

One initiative Smith is particularly passionate about is supporting Knitted Knockers, a volunteer-run program that provides handmade breast prostheses free of charge to women who have undergone mastectomies.

“I have them in all the stores because I think it’s an incredible service that they offer,” she said. “It’s not about the money. The fact is that some people can’t afford a breast form.”

The prostheses are available in a range of sizes, allowing individuals to visit a store, find the right fit in a private fitting room and leave with one at no cost.

Home Comfort Care also works closely with local hospitals and organizations such as Enliven Cancer Care, reflecting Smith’s longstanding commitment to community partnerships.

As the company marks 25 years in business, Smith remains steadfast in her belief that local businesses play a vital role in building strong communities.

“Shop local and stay local,” she says.

It’s a simple motto, but one that has guided Home Comfort Care’s growth from a home-based venture to a trusted regional provider serving thousands of residents across Muskoka, Parry Sound, Almaguin and Simcoe County.
