The rain came and went leaving the largest puddle at Hidden Valley Highlands Ski Area (HVHSA) with the help of Chris Thompson, a lift mechanic at HVHSA, who worked to build the puddle for the final event of the 2016/17 ski season, the annual Puddle Jump.
Chris was one of the brave souls who attempted the jump on a snowboard but bailed right in the middle with a huge splash! As he came out of the water he said “holy moly, that’s cold!” Indeed it was. Ski patrollers were nearby to hand out warm blankets to any participants that went for a swim.
The main event kicked off at 1:00 p.m. on March 25 when the sky cleared and the sun shone brightly on the slopes. The spectators gathered and cheered on the jumpers from alongside the large puddle and from the chalet deck above.
One jumper came across the water on his snowboard, twisting and turning as if he were on the slopes, and sprayed the entire crew and spectators – including the press!
There were a variety of participants, young and old, boys and girls, who were brave enough to venture down the Dutchman to the ice cold waters and soar across the puddle.
Participants were encouraged to wear their craziest costumes to celebrate the annual Dress-Up Day theme “Canadiana Costumes” in honour of Canada’s 150th.
The MC for the event, Phil Konoby, was asking the crowd what their favourite moments of the season were. Some of the responses were: “the sunshine”, “the puddle jump for sure” and “when people fall in the water”.
It was a spectacular day to celebrate such a great season. See everyone next year!
