Members of the Huntsville Royal Canadian Legion branch 232 kicked off the Poppy Campaign, a powerful symbol of remembrance, by placing poppies on councillors’ lapels on Monday evening.
Dreary November is just around the corner, but a bright red poppy will be seen pinned on many lapels as Canadians prepare to recognize Remembrance Day—that bittersweet occasion when we remember and honour the immense sacrifices made by our veterans for our democratic rights and freedoms.
The annual poppy campaign helps raise funds to support veterans and their families with things like medical expenses, veterans comfort care, bursaries for veteran family members as well as veteran care centres. The campaign began October 28 and ends with a ceremony and laying of wreaths at the Legion cenotaph on November 11, Remembrance Day.
