The Huntsville/Lake of Bays Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire shortly before 1 pm on Highway 35 in Dwight yesterday afternoon on June 26. Upon arrival, crews from Station 2 and Station 3 encountered thick smoke inside the two-storey home. The fire was quickly located and extinguished by fire crews.
There were no occupants home at the time and employees from adjacent businesses had witnessed the smoke and called 911. One employee entered the structure and removed two dogs that were inside. Unfortunately, a third dog had perished in the fire.
Fire damage was limited to the room of origin and the rest of the home suffered smoke and heat damage. Although the area of origin has been determined, the investigation into the cause and circumstances are still under investigation. Damage is estimated at $400,000.
