They were young and old, on foot or on wheels, with or without dogs in tow, and every one of them enthusiastic about the cause they were there to support: the 39th annual Huntsville Terry Fox Run.
The oldest of the Run supporters to gather at Huntsville High School was 92-year-old Jack Ball, who has been walking for Terry for 10 years now.
To inspire the Terry Fox Run participants and volunteers, organizer Sharon Stahls shared a John Bunyan quote: “You have not lived today until you have done something for someone who can never repay you.”
Teams that participated in the September 15th Run, and that were recognized with a round of applause, were ‘For Daisy’, ‘Sullivan’s Strong’, ‘Team Wild’, and the ‘Kilometre Patron Team’.
The Motivations Fitness duo woke everyone up by leading a spirited warm up before participants headed out. Stahls encouraged participants to make memories, stay safe and have fun during their 5km or 10km trek.
Once the participants were finished their walk, run or bike ride, they got to enjoy a variety of breakfast snacks.
This year’s Huntsville Terry Fox Run raised closed to $20,000 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
The participants’ efforts will give hope to patients and their families just as Terry Fox’s story was one of hope, said Stahls. “Even though the numbers of participants were down along with donations, Terry’s spirit was strong amongst all participants and that is what matters to keep Terry’s legacy alive and sharing his story.”
Next year will be the 40th annual Terry Fox Run, and the local committee is in need of more volunteers. There are many things to do and organize before, during and after a Terry Fox event. If you are interested, please contact Sharon Stahls at [email protected].
