Huntsville Public School student, Braunwyn Strickland, is riding to fight kids’ cancer.
She began the Great Cycle Challenge on August 1 with the goal of raising $2,500 as she rides a total of 300km.
Strickland was inspired to register for the Great Cycle Challenge by her teacher, Madame Boulard. “She has been cancer-free for six years and because I am a kid, I thought riding to support kids’ cancer research was important. Also, I love to ride both on mountain bike trails and roads, it’s fun and it’s great training,” said Strickland.
Strickland kicked off her fundraising by donating $50 of her own money, which her parents matched.
Then she began reaching out to people she knows, asking for their support. “I was looking for 50 people to pledge $50 each so that I could hit my fundraising target of $2,500.”
One of Strickland’s sponsors, Jamie Watkinson, has pledged $1.00 per kilometre and has paid the $300 upfront. “I’m hoping to ride more than 300 kilometres, just for him,” said Strickland.
As of August 10, she has ridden 114km and raised $1,673, just over 65 per cent of her target.
Participants of the GCC can invite other riders to join them for a group ride through the fundraising platform. Recently, Strickland proposed a group ride in Port Sydney, and fellow GCC rider, Elizabeth Stokes, joined her.
Individuals or businesses interested in supporting Strickland’s journey to raise money for kids’ cancer research can visit greatcyclechallenge.ca/riders/braunwynstrickland. On Wednesday, August 11, all donations made on the Great Cycle Challenge website will be matched by the Garron family (up to $1,000,000 in total), so you can double your impact by donating on that day.
Funds raised during the Great Cycle Challenge support the work of SickKids Foundation to provide care, develop treatments, and find a cure for childhood cancers.
