World Water Ski Tournament wows crowd with spectacular feats

They promised an exciting show and they didn’t disappoint.

The World Water Ski Show Tournament, held September 7-9 at Deerhurst Resort, featured more than 100 athletes on six teams from around the world—Australia, Belgium, Canada, China, Germany and the United States—showing off incredible tricks that had the crowd cheering wildly.

Although spectators were appreciative of all of the skills displayed, Team Canada got a little extra love from their home-country fans.

The cool, windy weather didn’t create ideal conditions, but the athletes handled the choppy water like pros.

On Saturday morning, Team Belgium had to wait for the ramp to be reset but spectators wouldn’t let them lose momentum, cheering, “Let’s go Belgium, let’s go!” When they finally took to the water, the team invited everyone ‘The Royal Banquet’ with their James Bond 007 theme.

Highlights included Team USA’s stellar skills demonstration including swivel skiing, barefooting, and freestyle jump skiers, and Team Canada’s Las Vegas Wedding-themed show complete with ‘crazy cousin Eddie’ waterskiing in downhill boots and skis crashing the celebration, detectives searching for the missing bride, and impersonations of Vegas favourites Siegfried and Roy, Elvis, Evel Knievel and Cirque du Soleil.
At the end of competition on Sunday, it was the team from the United States that came out on top. Final scores were:

1 USA 1735.02
2 Australia 1623.16
3 Canada 1424.48
4 China 1343.66
5 Belgium 1258.12
6 Germany 1183.86
