Work underway at the former Capitol Theatre in Huntsville

If you haven’t been by there lately, construction is underway at 8 Main Street West—the site of Huntsville’s former cinema.

The property sat for sale for a number of years before it was purchased by the current owner, his planning representative, John Gallagher, told Huntsville’s planning committee last year on August 11, 2021.

At the meeting, Gallagher noted that the commercial component of the building would be maintained with a place of worship and a restaurant to be located on the main floor, while the second floor, as well as the addition of a third floor, would contain a total of 14 apartments.

He said the owner would be adding five parking spots at the rear of the building and one would be accessible.

In lieu of an additional seven parking spaces required for the development, the owner was charged $21,000 by the municipality in order to proceed with his plans.

    Let’s do the parking math:
    A ‘place of worship,
    Plus a restaurant,
    Plus 14 apartments.
    Allowed to develop this with
    5 Parking Spaces!!
    A recipe for disaster.
We are inviting tremendous unnecessary future tension in our town.
Any ‘token’ financial considerations from developers could be collected for a long- needed Parking Garage?

I sure hope that $21k levied by the town goes towards bicycle infrastructure. Could imagine, charging fines for lack of parking. My goodness, lets move into the 21st century Huntsville.

  3. I’m just wondering if the building is now required to provide accessibility for someone that has a disability but it’s nice there will be more apartments.

Great location for apartments. Hopefully providing more affordable rental space that is much needed, as well walking distance to all amenities.

Can you imagine a town without a movie theatre?I can’t either.
