It is important for you to name an executor/executrix, because this person will oversee taking care of your estate after you are gone.
An executor has a big job ahead of them. They are tasked with carrying out all the wishes expressed in your Will: everything from obtaining a death certificate, to possibly applying for probate, to distributing your assets to the named beneficiaries in your Will (and more).
If you do not choose an executor before you pass away, the courts will appoint an administrator to execute your final wishes, and the person the court chooses may not be someone you feel is ideal for this role.
A Power of Attorney (POA) is a written legal document that authorizes the person you appoint to make financial and legal decisions on your behalf, if you become unable. Like choosing your executor, you need to select someone you trust, because a POA is important for the protection of your finances, personal decisions, and health as you age.
The people you choose for both roles should have your best interests at heart, because they will be given broad powers to make decisions that can affect your health care, finances, day-to-day life, and your beneficiaries when you are gone.
