We asked people on the street what they think of the 2025 federal election and what they consider the most important issue.

“I think this is one of the first times that I’ve been in an election where I think I’m voting for the leader rather than for the party and that really hasn’t happened to me before. I actually feel sorry for the minority parties because they haven’t got a chance of doing anything, but normally, I would prefer to have four or five parties.
“I think it’s basically how to respond to the United States, to the tariffs, and what the impact will be for our economy in the long term. It means a kind of a wholesale change in how we set our economy up and what relationships we build with other countries. So that’s a massive job!”
“I think the election is timely. There was a little bit of criticism that we shouldn’t have called it but I think it was a good idea to call it this time. I think both main parties are ready for it and I obviously have my favourites but I hope we get through it and we’re more united than we were before as a country.
“For me the main issue is climate change which is an issue that not as many people seem to care about anymore with the whole trade issue and you know Trump and everything but I think that’s still very important and I try to encourage people to look at parties’ climate change policy and I personally would not vote for a party that doesn’t have some kind of climate change plan, a real plan not just a slogan.”

“I guess with politics in general, I really don’t like the politics, but I guess it’s down to two-party voting at the present moment. I favour one side, but I think the country is pretty divided.
“Right now, for me, the most important issue would probably be the sovereignty issue. We can deal with the internal problems, but if we don’t have a country to deal with them, it won’t matter, so I say deal with the neighbour and put the family issues aside.”

“The election seems to be centered quite a bit on what’s going in the United States.
“My biggest hope is that we don’t lean too far towards the US system. I want to see us maintain our integrity as Canadians.
“It’s Important to me that we don’t see cuts to things like education, or any infringement on a woman’s right to make decisions regarding her own body.”
