Last month we told you about F.C. Hammond Well Drilling’s annual well draw, which awards one of their clients the cost of their well. Today that winner, Gord Cook, gave $2500 of his win back to local charities.
Two organizations – the Legion’s Poppy Fund and Hospice Huntsville – will each receive $1250.
“Part of life is giving back,” said Cook. “I enjoyed working with F.C. Hammond and all of the service providers building our cottage. It was a great experience and this is a nice way to top it off. And doing something local made a lot of sense.”
Cook said he looked to F.C. Hammond staff to recommend local charities and was pleased that the Legion was one of them. “I appreciated their suggestions. (The Legion) struck home for my wife and I – my father is a World War II veteran and he is receiving financial aid from them.”
Asked why he suggested these two charities, company co-owner Norm Yearley said, “Our secretary Julie’s father passed away in Hospice. And I’ve been a member of the Legion since 1973 so I have a soft spot for the Legion. I’m not a veteran, I never served in the armed forces, but it’s a great organization.”

Tony Evans, Sergeant at Arms for the Huntsville Legion, was on hand to accept the donation and said to Cook, “I can’t express my appreciation enough.”
The Poppy Fund provides financial assistance to veterans for everything from food, heating costs, and emergency shelter to prescription medication, medical appliances and medical equipment. Locally, funds have also been used to help other organizations that aid veterans. “We ask the nursing homes for a wish list and we’ve donated money to Fairvern including $8000 for canvas lifts,” said Evans. “And we’ve donated to Hospice for an immersion bath and lift chair. Anywhere veterans go, we’re there to help. That comes solely out of the Poppy Fund.”
