For two years, Huntsville High School’s Clothes Closet project has been providing a space for students to shop for clothing for free.
The ‘store’ has clothing, coats, hats, shoes, mittens, winter boots, prom attire and undergarments. It also takes special requests and uses funds raised to purchase items that a student needs but that the Clothes Closet doesn’t have in his or her size. .
“We had a teacher refer a student because she noticed on an outing he had one shoe with no sole so his feet were getting wet,” explains Clothes Closet organizer Karen Litchfield. “The Clothes Closet provided him with a pair of new running shoes. We also had a teacher refer a student who needed a winter coat. We purchased a new coat for this student, as we did not have one in her size.”
To help fund such purchases, the Clothes Closet will be holding a garage sale in front of Huntsville High School on Saturday, May 12 from 9 a.m. to noon. The sale will be moved indoors to the school cafeteria if it’s raining.
There will be clothing, including a large selection of designer jeans, tops, and footwear and a few household items for sale. All are items that were donated to the Clothes Closet, but may not have been suitable for high school students. Items will be $1.00 each and all proceeds will go back to the Clothes Closet.
