Watch for cyclists on the road and give them a cheer during this Sunday’s TriMuskokan

The TriMuskokan, Huntsville’s homegrown triathlon, gets underway Sunday morning (June 25). It’s billed as a fun event rather than a race because they want every participant, whether it’s their first triathlon or their tenth, to have a great experience. You can help by heading over to the Canada Summit Centre to cheer on the participants as they make their way in and out of the transition zone from each leg of the course.

“We strongly encourage that people come down to spectate at the TriMuskokan,” says Rich Trenholm, Co-Director for The TriMuskokan. “Come see what a triathlon is all about, and what a great community-oriented event this is.”

As you’re travelling around town on Sunday morning, remember that there will be some temporary and partial road closures to keep the participants safe:

The Canada Summit Centre (CSC) is open, but parking is limited because the event takes place in both the CSC parking lot next to the train station and adjacent to the high school. Those sections will be closed from Saturday, June 24 at 5:00 p.m. for setup until Sunday, June 25 after 10:00 p.m. Parking is available across from Albertos, at Muskoka Heritage Place or behind the Active Living Centre.

The roads around the CSC will have many people – athletes, spectators and volunteers – as well as pylons and structures for the event. Organizers ask that people only drive around the CSC if absolutely necessary. The following nearby roads will be closed temporarily:

Camp Kitchen Road, closed Sunday, June 25 from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m.
Park Drive, closed Sunday, June 25 from 7 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.
Forbes Hill Drive from the Active Living Centre to Brunel Road, intermittent traffic stoppages from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Brunel Road will also have partial closure and intermittent traffic stoppages from Park Drive to Town Line Road and from Town Line Road to South Portage Road between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m.

Race organizers are also reminding church-goers to give themselves extra time to get there or take an alternate route if their usual one follows part of the event course.

“We ask that drivers take care, and give our participants lots of room, and to pass safely,” said Trenholm. The TriMuskokan participants have been reminded that they, too, need to share the road and to stay to the right side of the road unless they are passing another athlete, added Trenholm.

Participants have been busy training for the event, including a recent pre-race clinic hosted by the TriMuskoka club. Now all that’s left to do is do it. Good luck to all!
