The popular annual road race, Band on the Run, is just over a week away. The event attracts hundreds of runners from both the Huntsville area as well as much further afield. They come for the challenge, they come for the music—10 different bands are stationed throughout the race routes to motivate and entertain participants—and they come for the fun.
A big part of the fun factor at Band on the Run are the volunteers. They are cheerleaders supreme, many dressing up in colourful costumes, all cheering on the runners as they make their way from the start to the finish line.
“Our race is known as having the best volunteers,” says race co-organizer, Justine Brown. “They dress up and make it super fun for people. We totally appreciate them.”
About 120 people volunteers are needed in various locations and there are still some volunteer positions available, particularly route marshals.
“Some of them require just a short time commitment because that part of the route is only closed for about an hour,” notes Brown, adding that route marshals fulfill an important role. “They are there for the safety of the participants.”
Volunteers receive a race t-shirt and lunch is provided. Family and friends of participants—including children, provided they have someone supervising them—are welcome to help out. Organizers will also sign volunteer cards for high school students looking to fulfill their required volunteer hours.
Anyone interested in volunteering can see available positions and sign up at bandontherun.ca/volunteers.
Band on the Run is in its eighth year. The start and finish line have moved to the Canada Summit Centre for this year.
