U16 Girls Strikers bring home silver from HDSA Cup

The Huntsville U16 Girls Strikers Rep team had a tremendous season this year, said Coach Greg Pitts. They started off with a 0-5 record but then buckled down, came out to practices and started to play the soccer their coach was preaching.

“They all had a great attitude all season. I was amazed at the turn out that we had for each game. The team was made up of at least ten players that had never played rep soccer before, so the learning curve was steep but by the Cup series of games the girls did amazing,” said Coach Pitts.

The U16 Girls played hard at the Huronia District Soccer Association Cup, held September 9 -10 in Barrie, where the girls met their two rivals from their regular season games: Wasaga Beach and Ramara.

On Saturday, the Strikers played in the semi-finals against Wasaga Beach. As time ran out, the score was tied. The girls held their own and pushed their skills to their limits right until the end, bringing the game to a shootout during which Huntsville stole the win from their nemesis Wasaga for their first cup win of the weekend. Strikers Manager, Deb Smith, said, “After a tough season with Wasaga, it was awesome to beat them. It was a sweet victory, as we were already winners going in to the gold cup game against Ramara.”

On Sunday, the Strikers met Ramara – their rivals from league games – for the gold medal game. Ramara dominated the first half of the game but then the Strikers dug deep as they knew the stakes were at their highest. The team worked together and made so many great attempts that were denied by the Ramara goalkeeper. Ramara was fast and used their good leg work to control the ball to take the win.

Congratulations on your silver medals, Strikers!

The girls would like to thank Coach Greg Pitts, their Manager Deb Smith and their parents for supporting the team throughout the 2017 season.
