Town sets up free sandbag filling station behind Canada Summit Centre

On Friday April 14, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry – Bracebridge Minden Parry Sound District issued a Flood Warning that is in effect until Friday, April 21, 2023. This Flood Warning will affect residents living adjacent to lakes and rivers within Huntsville. Property owners should be aware that conditions are changing rapidly, and they are advised to take precautions to protect their property.

Updates as of April 14, 2023:

  • Sandbags: The Town has set up a free sandbag filling station behind the Canada Summit Centre (20 Park Drive). Free sandbags and sand are available for filling, with a limited amount of pre-filled bags currently available. Please note free sandbags are only available to those in low-lying areas.
  • Information on how to fill sandbags and build a sandbag dike can be found at Huntsville.ca
  • The public is asked to please stay away from riverbanks and flowing water. Supervise children and pets closely for the water’s edge is unpredictable this time of year.
  • The downtown core is beginning to experience high water levels as the water makes its way through the water system
  • Visit Ontario.ca to learn more on what to do before, during, and after a flood including the creation of a 72-hour kit.
  • Residents are encouraged to check on family and friends in low-lying areas prone to flooding to see if assistance is needed.

The Town of Huntsville Emergency Control Group and Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) Officials will continue to monitor conditions daily and provide updates and resources as required.  The community is asked to follow Huntsville.ca for more information as conditions continue to evolve.

In this day in the 21’st century, with hundreds of years of technology behind us would you not wonder if there was something better than the technology of medieval Europe to defend against flooding?
Maybe something light, easily deployed, that gained weight and stability by some chemical process from the water itself?
There must be some great minds out there that could come up with something better than hauling sand bags like an Egyptian would have done. 2000 years ago.
    Just a thought.
