The things that happen when you’ve been naughty

By Shgual Rof Tsuj

The other day while walking up Main Street I encountered Len Ross in front of Town Hall. I have known Len for a long time as a businessperson in town and as a member of the Rotary Club of Huntsville.

Seeing that Len was carrying a small stuffed animal made this meeting rather interesting. During these troubled times, it often is necessary to have as much support as necessary to get one through a normal day, but in Len’s case I decided to ask him about the animal he was carrying, and his answer brought a smile to my face.

Len told me that recently he had attended a Rotary meeting in Barbados and was presented with Suni (pronounced Sunny.) The story gets a little deeper here because you as the reader should understand that a lot of Rotary clubs, as a part of their meetings, fine their members for various indiscretions such as speaking out of turn, perhaps arguing with the President or even just showing up a little late. This fine is expected and treated with good humour. All funds collected go into club community projects. All of that said, it appears that this Rotary club has a special fine for its members, one that doesn’t just involve a dollar amount. In the case of members who do something naughty that money won’t solve, they are presented with Suni. With Suni in tow, the member is expected to bring the animal with them into their community and workplace for a period of one week.

Why was Len presented with Suni? He shyly said that he wouldn’t tell me, but he did say unlike other members of the club who were expected to only look after Suni for one week, he was directed to carry out his punishment until he could return in about three months. As Len left me to continue down Main St., I did ask him about his plans for Suni and he promised to keep me informed about Suni’s adventures in Huntsville.

This reporter intends to keep track of Suni and to keep you up to date on Suni’s adventures with Len.
