The Port Sydney Winter Carnival: winter fun for all

When it comes to winter fun, the Port Sydney Winter Carnival never disappoints.

The 2020 carnival kicked off on Friday, Jan. 31 with an evening skating party hosted by the Port Sydney Lion’s Club, which included a warm bonfire, sweet hot chocolate and s’mores, and spider dogs for everyone to enjoy.

On Saturday, the temperatures were perfect to spend the day outdoors moving from activity to activity at the beachfront and community centre. The Port Sydney Parks and Recreation Group hosted a variety of activities that both kids and adults could enjoy together.

At the beach, families joined the skate party on the Lions rink and the Port Sydney Firefighter’s Association hosted a broomball tournament on the lake and welcomed newcomers to check out the sport.

Outside the Port Sydney Community Hall, the tubing hill sponsored by Ontario Recycling was a hit, and families enjoyed playing outdoor games and snowshoeing before pausing to warm up by a second bonfire. Side-by-side rides were offered by Rosseau Road Power Sports and Marine or carnival-goers could hitch a ride in a horse-drawn wagon thanks to Twin Maples Farm.

Inside the hall, there was cookie decorating, a make-and-take craft table, a silent auction, and a yarn circle hosted by Knox United Church, along with a hot lunch of chili or hot dogs.

On Sunday, the weekend wrapped up with a delicious community pancake breakfast at the hall hosted by the Port Sydney Parks and Recreation Group.
