It’s Wayback Wednesday, sponsored by Jamie Lockwood, broker/owner of Sutton Group Muskoka Realty!

Mulveney’s The Pines service station, facing west, was located one mile north of the Port Sydney turn on #11 Highway. The vehicle in the postcard is a 1935 Oldsmobile. Postcard date 1935-1945. From a private collection donated to Muskoka Digital Archives by David Johns.

Mulveney’s “The Pines” was established in 1932 by Charles and his son Percy Mulveney. The business consisted of a service station, restaurant, and cabins. Percy ran the business until 1970.
Note the doors on the 1935 Oldsmobile. They were called suicide doors because they were hinged at the rear edge, so if the vehicle was moving and they sprang open, anyone who grabbed the door to stop that from happening was usually whisked out of their seat into the roadway. Seat belts were not in use at that time.

Is the Hwy 11 referred to in this picture the old Hwy 11? I seem to remember this station where old Hwy 11 and Lone Pine Rd divide.
