With a new event, The Hudson Hair Salon and Spa hopes to both highlight the opportunities in its industry and raise funds to support a student who wants a career in its field.
“Ever since we opened we have been involved in the community but we decided it was time to change things up and put all of our energy, funds, and time into something totally different and unique,” said The Hudson’s manager Tammy Hunt, who is organizing the event with stylist and training director, Kirsten Donald.
The August 22 event offers a variety of entertainment in River Mill Park. Admission is free, but attendees can support the cause in a variety of ways.
There will be live music performed by Sean Mcllroy, a beer tent with Canvas Brewing Co., coffee and treats from Tim Hortons, and the salon will offer hair and spa consultations for a small fee.
A silent auction will include hair products, hot tools, takeout mugs, handmade charcuterie boards, gift certificates to The Hudson, Downtown Dollars, and other fun goodies.
Hair care products will be sold at discounted prices, with profits going towards the bursary.
“A lot of families have been struggling through COVID and when parents lose their income that can easily affect the ability to put their kids through post-secondary,” said Hunt.
In the coming school year, a Huntsville High School student who plans to enter aesthetics school will write an essay detailing why they deserve the bursary for their tuition. The funds will be awarded in spring 2022.
The winner of the bursary will also receive private, one-on-one training with a Wella colour specialist to start them off on the right foot as they head into school.
“We really want to shed light on the fact that this is an amazing industry for our youth to go into,” said Hunt. “There are so many opportunities for hair dressers and aestheticians nowadays. You can just grow and grow.”
The event will be held August 22 from 11-2.
“Even if you can just come down for five minutes to show your support we would absolutely be so appreciative,” said Hunt. Cash donations toward the bursary can also be made at the salon until next spring.
The Hudson team intends to make this an annual initiative, with next year’s event held at their Port Carling location to award a bursary to a student in that community as well.
