Lots and lots of people showed up at Huntsville’s Terry Fox Run on Sunday morning ready to walk, bike or run in memory of Terry Fox while also raising money for cancer research.
According to event organizer Bill Coon, since the run started in Huntsville in 1986 the community has raised $1.29 million.
This year’s event had 247 registered participants. At the time of publication $13,489.50 in donations had been collected but money is still coming in through corporate sponsorship, merchandise, schools and online pledges.
“The money is money,” Coon told the energetic crowd, “but I think the important thing is that most of us are here because Terry was pretty special. People of my vintage will remember him and remember what a special summer that was in 1980. Now, 37 years later, it’s still important.”
Bill went on to commend the schools for keeping the spirit of Terry Fox in the forefront. “I would like to recognize the job that the schools do in passing the character of Terry Fox on to the next generation of Canadians. Let’s keep the memory of Terry alive.”
Forty-four volunteers worked behind the scenes to ensure that 31 years later the tradition of the Terry Fox Run in Huntsville continues. Bill Coon issued a plea asking for new (younger) people to pick up the torch and join the committee. See our earlier story: Terry Fox Run organizers are desperate for new committee members.
