Almost $2,000 raised at Rotary’s Giant Book Sale

For just one dollar, wouldn’t you grab that Stephen King horror classic for the cottage?

Perhaps a history of professional hockey in Canada, penned by a former Prime Minister is more up your alley? No matter what kind of book you enjoy, at the Giant Book Sale held on Canada Day, all it cost was a buck.

“Our strategy basically came down to: if every book sells for a dollar, this will be our biggest fundraiser,” said Steve Lavigne, the incoming President of the Rotary Club of Huntsville Lake of Bays. “There was a lot of discussion trying to find that perfect price. We thought, at one dollar there is no reason not to grab the book that catches your eye.”

Judging by the large crowd, and the even larger bags of books leaving Trinity Hall, the sale was a great success. And a successful day for the Giant Book Sale means a successful day for youth programs in our community. All funds are going toward breakfast and lunch programs for students, sending kids to camp, and other great support systems for those who can use a helping hand.

In true Canada Day fashion, the Giant Book Sale was made possible through the efforts of a great group of people volunteering their time. “We have over 20 members, every one pitched in to help,” Lavigne made certain to note. The books were all carefully organized by volunteers into sections like sci-fi, horror and mystery, but one table was busier than the rest. It should come as no surprise that the hockey table was the most popular destination for the proud Canadian patrons in attendance.

For those wondering where all the books came from, and there were a great many of them, it seems there was one single donor. While his name was eventually given, Rotary Club members Suzanne Willett, Nick Paroschy and Lynn Doyle couldn’t be certain whether or not he wished to remain anonymous, so it will simply be said that the donor was thanked often by volunteers for his generosity.

At the end of the day, almost $2,000 was raised to the benefit of youth in our community. That’s a lot of one dollar book purchases! Stay tuned to learn what community group will next offer the books for sale.
