Ontario Parks is 125 years old—nearby Algonquin Provincial Park was the first to be established back in 1893 as a public park and forest reserve—and there are now hundreds of provincial parks across Ontario. Algonquin Outfitters wants to take people near and far back to where it all began with several contests that it is running now.
First up: the ultimate canoe trip. You and three friends can spend five days exploring the backcountry lakes and rivers of Algonquin Park, and get up close and personal (but maybe not too personal) with the park’s resident moose, beavers, otters and loons. Entry is open to anyone, anywhere, but you have to get yourself to Algonquin Park if you’re the lucky winner drawn on September 2, 2018. There is no cost to enter. You can do that here.
If you’re an artist or photographer, this next one’s for you. Head to the park and capture one (or all!) of 32 designated landmarks with your camera or paints and then enter them in the Algonquin Landmarks contest. This is AO’s 16th photo contest to date and they have partnered with the Algonquin Art Centre this time around. Also new for this contest: entries can be submitted via Instagram using the hashtag #algonquinlandmarks. (Be sure it’s public so the judges can see it!) There are some great prizes to be won and entries are free—submit yours before October 31, 2018. You’ll find contest rules, the landmark locations, and other details here. You can scope out the
And then there’s the 2018-19 Paddle Art Contest. The inaugural contest, which celebrated the life of Tom Thomson, was such a huge success, and there was such demand for a repeat, that AO is running it again in celebration of Ontario Parks’ 125th anniversary. Registration is $30 which also gets you a paddle blank to work with. What you do with it is up to you—paint it, carve it, sculpt it, get as creative as you want as long as your entry includes a paddle. It’s for a good cause, too. Proceeds from the auction held at the end of the contest support local arts organizations. Details on how to register are here.
Algonquin Outfitters has also provided a sweet prize for the annual The Friends of Algonquin Park fundraising raffle. It’s a $6,100 prize that includes a 16-foot Swift canoe, two Badger Paddles, two PFDs, a canoe pack, a yoke pad, a rescue kit, Algonquin Park maps, a canoe transportation kit to help you get your new canoe home, and a $300 Algonquin Outfitters shopping spree. And there are other prizes up for grabs, too. Get details here.
Good luck!
