Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

5:21 PM EDT Tuesday 9 April 2024

Environment Canada and Climate Change is advising that conditions are favorable in Muskoka and East Parry Sound for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts and damaging hail.

Hazards: Toonie-size hail. Wind gusts near 90 km/h.

Timing: This evening.

Discussion: Severe thunderstorms have developed over a few areas and will likely continue this evening as a cold front approaches. Very large hail can damage property, break windows, dent vehicles, and cause serious injury. Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Locally heavy rain is also possible. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors! Emergency Management Ontario recommends that you take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches. Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
