Roderick “Rod” David Mundy

It is with great sadness that we announce that Roderick (Rod) David Mundy died peacefully at his home on July 25, 2024. His wife, Anne, was by his side.

Rod was born on March 6, 1944, in Surrey, England, to David and Denise Mundy (predeceased).

He is survived by his wife Anne (nee Fyfe), and siblings Louise (Alan Weiss), John (Leanne) and Georgina (Dean Mikalauskas). He was also a favourite uncle to two generations of children, sharing tall tales, good advice, adventures, and laughs that have become family folklore.

Although he contracted polio at age five, Rod nonetheless lived life to the fullest as a husband, professional, volunteer, and friend.

In 1967, he married Anne and, in 1969, moved to Huntsville, where he was hired as an elementary school teacher. This was the beginning of a 31-year career as a teacher and school principal. He became a salary negotiator for the local teachers and was appointed to a provincial salary negotiating committee for what was then known as the Ontario Public School Teachers Federation. After retirement, he became an area coordinator for Nipissing University.

Rod’s real passion was water and boating, which began at Butternut Bay on the St. Lawrence River and on the Rideau Lakes when he was a small boy. He swam well and, in retirement, took sailing lessons. He and Anne owned a succession of boats, beginning with a houseboat purchased in 1972. With his uncanny sense of navigation, he would take every possible opportunity to cruise the Muskoka Lakes for hours.

Rod was a volunteer and board member of several charities, including Trinity Non-Profit Housing, Habitat for Humanity, the Friends for the Physically Handicapped, and the Accessibility Advisory Committee for the Town of Huntsville. He was the Health and Benefits Representative on the executive of RTOREO District 46 for many years. He and Anne also participated as volunteers in Book Clubs for Inmates at Beaver Creek Institution.

A Celebration of Life will take place at the Active Living Centre, 20 Park Drive, on Saturday, August 17, 2024, from 2 – 4 p.m. Remembrances will be shared at 3:30 p.m.

Sending my condolences to Mr. Mundy’s family. I am 42 years old now and have moved far away, but Mr. Mundy was my elementary school principal and I have fond memories of him from growing up. I only remember a few teachers I had, and that shows that the ones that stood out made a real impact. Rest Easy Mr Mundy!

    Deepest sympathy to the family.
Mr. Mundy was my teacher at Bracebridge Public School for grades 4&5. He made quite an impact on me and others I’m sure, and taught us many life skills that we carried forth into our future.

Mr. Mundy was a good man and I have fond memories of cruising around the Muskoka lakes in his boat with my family when I was a child.
