A small piece of paradise was unpaved in Huntsville this week. The triangular parking area between River Mill Park and the Town Docks near the end of Dara Howell Way was scheduled for work this week to rectify drainage issues. At the General Committee meeting in April, councillors elected to grass over the area when the drainage improvements were complete, rather than return it to paved parking. (Read that story on Doppler here.)
At that meeting, Brandon Hall, Engineering Technician for the Town’s Public Works department explained that due to poor drainage the gravel section in that area required maintenance because it would wash away. The work to fix the problem was to involve removing the existing asphalt, digging out the area, regrading it and then either paving or grassing over it. Council chose the latter option. The budgeted cost for the project was $50,000.

Drainage improvements were completed before the area was leveled and sprayed with grass seed

Good news and good move toward making the park more of a park.
1st phaze complete.
Kudos! Now if the Town will just move the parking spaces elsewhere, e.g. to a one-way High Street, we could have a true park; instead of a small park and a playground.
Joni Mitchell would laud the Town’s fine decision!
Thanks Town of Huntsville for making the correct choice concerning replacing pavement with grass. This is what I call listening to the tax payers.
