Reel Alternatives Huntsville is a community not-for-profit organization founded in 1998 to present quality Canadian and international films to enrich the cultural experience of the community.
The group’s next screening, the acclaimed film Pain and Glory, will be screened at the Algonquin Theatre on Monday, March 16 starting at 7 p.m. Featuring riveting performances from award-winning actors Antonio Banderas and Penelope Cruz, this is another accomplishment in the illustrious career of director Pedro Almodovar. (Click here to see the film’s trailer.)
For the last few months, tickets have been sold through the Huntsville Public Library, with prices of $8 in advance and $9 at the door. However, with the recent temporary closing of the library, tickets for this show (and possibly the next) will be sold by the Algonquin Theatre box office. Tickets can be picked up in person during box office hours, Monday to Friday between 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can be reserved by calling the box office at 705-789-4975.
Reel Alternatives presents movies on the first and third Monday of each month except July and August. During the summer they co-sponsor the movie presentations at the Huntsville Festival. The group presents movies that would not normally be screened by the local Capitol Twin Cinemas and offers an alternative to more commercially driven films.
Net proceeds from the films are invested directly back into qualified community groups and individuals. Over their 20-plus years, the Reel Alternatives group has donated close to $65,000 to deserving recipients and is primarily responsible for creating and improving the Huntsville Library’s collection of film publications and media, as well as collections at the Dwight and Baysville libraries.
Additional information about the group, and up-to-date movie information, is available on their web site at reelalternativeshuntsville.ca. If you wish to join their e-blast list, to be advised of upcoming films, there is a link on the site. In addition, the opportunity to sponsor a film is available for $175 with further information available by calling Helena at 705-783-9107.
