Red Dress Day honours murdered and missing Indigenous women and girls

There will be red dresses across the country today to once more bring attention to the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls across Canada.

The Red Dress campaign began on May 5, 2010, and has become an annual event.

The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls concluded in its 2019 report that Indigenous women are 12 times more likely to be murdered or go missing in Canada than other women and made 231 recommendations for change.

A national action plan to end violence against Indigenous women and girls was released in 2021 but Indigenous leaders say they want to see more momentum when it comes to implementing the recommendations across the country.

According to Aboriginal Alert, “Indigenous Women and Girls were involved in two-thirds of the missing alerts in 2022. That’s over 600 missing alerts in 12 months! 76 of those women and girls are still missing and 15 of them were reported deceased.
