Head down to Partners Hall in the Algonquin Theatre this month to see what the grade 11 and 12 photography students of HHS have been up to so far this year in the Raw Creativity exhibit.

The photos included in the show were voted on by the students. The grade 11 exhibit features the work of 32 students and will be on display until November 14. Twenty-two photos by Grade 12 students will then be shown from November 16-30.

HHS teacher Adison Powell organized the show but due to an injury Susanne Allen Spiers took over as curator. Allen Spiers is involved with the Huntsville Art Society and when she heard there was a cancellation in the organization’s monthly shows at Partners Hall, she thought it would be a great idea to coordinate an exhibit of her students’ work.

“I feel really grateful that the students’ work gets to be on display for our community to see,” said Allen Spiers. “It would have been really difficult to share otherwise due to COVID. What’s the point of making all of this beautiful work if no one gets to see it?”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the classes weren’t able to view the show together, but students were encouraged to go on their own time.

The image for the show’s poster was created by Japanese exchange student Misaki Kaneyama, who photo-stitched her panoramic view of Lion’s Lookout into a world globe.

“I encouraged my students to choose an open-ended theme that showcased their uniqueness,” said Allen Spiers. “We wanted to showcase a broad base of themes, images, and diversity in this show.”

Allen Spiers and her students have discussed displaying future exhibits in the HHS cafeteria window so that friends and family can see what they’ve been creating in class.

Raw Creativity can be viewed in Partners Hall Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until November 30.

I would like to make mention of our newest Photography teacher, Adison Powell, who inspired our grade 11 and 12 students to create the photos for the RAW Creativity show. I organized and co-curated with Adison, but he paved the way for the development of these photographic works in his classroom. Adison definitely deserves a shout out for his efforts in this show. In a classroom confined by COVID protocols, the diversity of the imagery is admirable.
Please do come see both shows!
