Pride flag raised at Town Hall for Muskoka Pride Week

The Pride Flag was raised in municipalities across Muskoka today, including at Huntsville’s Town Hall, in honour of Muskoka Pride Week (July 17-25, 2021).

Mayor Karin Terziano, Muskoka Pride president Merv Taylor-Morin and his husband John Taylor-Morin, and Gilbert Centre women’s health coordinator Kellie Leeder met this morning to celebrate the start of Muskoka Pride Week.

“It’s just so obvious why Pride is still important after what happened this year to the flag at Huntsville Public School,” said Merv. “It was very upsetting so it’s absolutely essential that we speak out against racism and homophobia.”

Last month, some youth set fire to the Pride flag at HPS and recorded a video of it which was shared on social media. It left members of the community feeling hurt and shocked.

This year marks 12 years of the Muskoka Pride board, which currently has seven members, as well as a membership of thousands of LGBTQ2+ individuals and allies.

The Muskoka Pride board spent more than six months planning events for this week but had to change course due to continuing COVID-19 restrictions. Many of this year’s events are virtual, with some socially distanced, in-person events still going ahead, including two drag shows, and a film screening. See the full list of events here.

The flag will fly at Town Hall until July 26.

“We are so happy to live here,” said Merv. “Muskoka is so welcoming of us. Every mayor in the towns we visit have been so supportive.”
