Portage Flyer train to Santa, a community tradition since 2004!

By Danielle McPherson

It seemed that every child in Huntsville had come to say hello to Santa on Saturday night at the Rotary Village Train Station.

There was not an empty parking space all around and the line to board the Portage Flyer for a visit to Santa was packed from the very start of the evening.

While everyone waited, volunteers provided delicious hot chocolate and served cookies made by the culinary students at Huntsville High School. There were kids playing in the snow, and lots of laughter all around.

As people got closer to the main station, it became easier to hear the beautiful sound of the carolers singing all of their best Christmas carols.

Aboard the train there was a sense of excitement and frenzy, there were children plotting their meeting with Santa, and parents trying to coax mitts onto little hands to protect against Jack Frost.

Muskoka Heritage Place and the Town of Huntsville have been hosting this community Christmas event for nearly 18 years, since 2004.

There was a rumour that the Grinch could make an appearance but in the end, he could not make it due to a Christmas party happening down in Whoville.

The countdown to Christmas continues with less than a week remaining!

Joe finally got to see Santa. After the polite hellos and
introductions, Joe asked Santa for a remote-control boat that he can drive all on his own. Photo by Danielle McPherson.
