The Port Sydney/Utterson & Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year award was created in 1983, and is presented each year to one person who has made a significant contribution to the Port Sydney community. This individual must be someone who exemplifies community spirit and adds to the quality of life for others in the community. He or she will be a person who has gone the extra mile and who always volunteers when there is a need.
“We are happy to celebrate this year’s recipient as someone who is described by fellow volunteers as friendly, dedicated, thorough, easy-going, a team player who is fun to work with, someone supportive of local businesses, and who is well-known for coordinating a wide variety of community events,” said Derek Watson-Brown, Chamber Vice-President.
Alex Polmateer, a local business owner, added that “this person helps with most of the BBQs in the spring, summer and fall, as well as the Winter Carnival. She plays an integral role in organizing the Port Sydney Turkey Dinner, which brings in 900 – 1000 people every year. This person also does all of the fundraising for Port Sydney Parks and Rec, and then she offers her time to help with every event.”
This person volunteers all year long, strengthening the partnerships between the Port Sydney Parks & Recreation Group and other local groups. It is clear to everyone that this individual is determined to make our community a great and caring place to live.
With our community’s gratitude, we celebrate this year’s winner – Reagan Gray!
The award was presented during Canada Day Celebrations at the Port Sydney Beach.
