Plunging into the chilly waters of the Muskoka River

You’re braver than most. “I get that a lot,” says Huntsville resident Benjamin Wein.

Wein likes submerging in cold water because he says it gets his adrenaline flowing and his heart pumping.

Wein had heart surgery several years ago to address a defective valve from birth, but it left him with atrial fibrillation—which means his heart is off its rhythm and contracts more than usual.

“I followed the medical advice for over 1 year after surgery taking various medications and some rehab. I didn’t feel well, it slowed down my heart and I had no energy. My body would shake with the atrial fibrillations. I decided to take my health into my own hands – adjusting my diet, and the cold plunges, walking daily and I stopped the meds that were slowing down my heart,” he said.

Aside from following a healthy lifestyle, Wein says frigid water helps. “It’s amazing. It gives you a rush of adrenaline, dopamines and it feels euphoric. It’s kind of like a drug. You know if I don’t do it for a few days I feel… withdrawals.”

He said plunging into freezing water makes him feel good. He’d do it in his tub but dipping in the river is so much better. Wein purchased a home in Huntsville and moved to the area with his wife about three years ago and officially retired in July 2022.

Israeli-born and Huntsville resident Benjamin Wein says dipping in the chilly waters of the Muskoka River is a benefit to his health.
