Ontario Solicitor General Michael Kerzner visits Port Sydney Fire Hall

Solicitor General for Ontario Michael Kerzner recently paid a visit to the Huntsville-Lake of Bays Fire Department.

Surrounded by firefighters and incoming mayors for Huntsville and Lake of Bays, Nancy Alcock and Terry Glover respectively, Kerzner touted the Province’s new mandatory firefighter certification training program, which came into effect on July 1, 2022.

The regulation introduces mandatory minimum certification standards for firefighters, with some exceptions, that align with fire protection services being performed. This will help ensure that firefighters have consistent training according to the level of service they provide, set by a municipal council, thereby supporting firefighter and public safety, according to the Province.

Certain firefighters are exempt from the certification standards based on their prior knowledge, training and skills.
