How many ways can you get exercise in a pool (and have fun, too!)? The list keeps growing at Huntsville’s Centennial Pool thanks to a new grant and some innovative programming.
The Town recently received a grant from the Ontario Ministry of Senior Affairs to purchase two new Hydrorider aquabikes to add to its fleet of 10, along with aquamats for on-the-water strengthening and stretching.
“The grant was was made available to Active Living Centres for the purpose of encouraging healthy active aging and to meet the social, physical and recreation needs of our growing aging population,” says Morven Barnes, Manager of Aquatics for the Town of Huntsville. “This population has already expressed delight about the two new bikes and I can’t wait to see how the stretch class responds to the added balance challenge of the mats.”
Also new this fall is an expanded indoor kayak program, with more kayak polo classes and a special rolling clinic for youth and adults.
“The kayak program really took off last spring. People like the opportunity to develop their kayak skills when the weather is not conducive to doing that outside,” says Barnes.
Local teachers will also have opportunity to boost school spirit by entering a team of five in the elementary school Kayak Polo Tournament. “This tournament is for grades 6 through 8 and it will be great fun,” says Barnes. “Expert skills are not necessary. Join us and have a blast!” The tournament will run Tuesday, September 12 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The cost is $12 per person. To register call 789-6421.
The fun for youth doesn’t stop there. “One of our instructors has been dreaming up new fitness classes for youth and has developed the Youth Wibit Wipeout,” says Barnes. The format will be similar to the Wipeout game show that has contestants navigating a large obstacle course. “It will have really interesting challenges. The Wibit is going to be involved and I’m sure the new aquamats will be, too. It’s going to be so fun.”
Registration for fall programs opens September 12 at 7:30 a.m. Did you know that the Town launched a new online registration program in August? Every resident, whether you are new to Town programming or a returning user, will have to create a new account before registering online. Don’t wait until registration day, though – some programs fill quickly so it’s important that you create your new user account prior to the September 12 registration day. Create your new account online here or visit the Customer Service desk at the Canada Summit Centre.
These fun new additions to aquatics are just a small part of what’s being offered for leisure programs this fall. Check out the leisure guide to see what else is new!
