Nancy Alcock has filed her nomination papers to run for Mayor of Huntsville in the upcoming October municipal election.
Alcock had previously filed to run as Brunel Ward councillor but has since withdrawn her application opting for the position of Mayor of Huntsville instead.
Alcock has been on council since 2014, serving as a Town and District councillor. She has also been the chair of both the Huntsville and District planning committees. She has served as chair of Huntsville’s development services committee for the past two terms and chair of the District community and planning committee during this term of council.
Alcock was also chair of the District housing task force and sat on the Huntsville housing task force during her previous term of council. She is also on the Board of Directors of the Muskoka Watershed Council as a District of Muskoka representative.
Alcock worked for the Province of Ontario for more than 20 years in project management, coordination, and planning on files such as the West Don Lands community development project and managed several high-profile projects for the Ontario Native Affairs Secretariat (ONAS) during the 1992 constitutional negotiations.
She said she’s been approached by many people to run which helped her make the decision.
Alock said there are several initiatives she wants to see realized that would have significant implications on the community such as housing. “There have been mistakes along the way, I’d like to ensure that we actually see some of those projects come to fruition.”
Alcock also spoke of the implementation of the Community Planning Permit system in Huntsville. “It’s fairly cutting edge. Not a lot of municipalities have it and we see it as a real opportunity to try and tackle some of the issues that we’ve been kind of grappling with… and its implementation,” she said. She said Huntsville is growing by leaps and bounds and while the Official Plan is a great document for building sustainability its implementation is equally as important. “I think finding that balance of growth and sustainability is an ongoing issue in our community and again I’d say I’m really well-positioned to work on those issues.”
She said health care and ensuring that municipal representatives stay on top of some of the promises made by the Province is important. She also spoke of the environment. “We have such an active climate change group in both Huntsville and Bracebridge… and a lot of people who have expressed real interest in what we are doing to promote policy that deals with climate change.” Alcock said the District has done quite a bit on that front and all the municipalities have been working with the District to come up with their own plan but she said it needs some real leadership. She said those are among the issues she’d like to address as mayor.
Alcock will be running against three other candidates: Steve Hernen, Reuben Pyette-Bouillon, and Tim Withey.

I’m thrilled to see Ms. Alcock throw her hat in the ring.
She brings a lot to the table from her past experience.
She has also demonstrated a deep understanding of the issues facing our growing community during her time on council.
We have a far more interesting race for mayor now – best of luck to all and may the best candidate win!

Nancy Alcock is one of the District councillors fooled into making a massive mistake at the airport.
In spite of all aviation professionals and even the latest consultant stating building beside instead of on top of a runway makes the most sense and is the cheapest solution for the mysterious, single new tenant.
Not all councillors were fooled.
Just the majority.

I believe that Nancy Alcock is by far the best candidate for Mayor. She has experience in many levels of government. Nancy is presently deputy mayor of Huntsville, a district councillor and chair of Planning. She has been a longtime supporter of the Arts and would bring passion, commitment and intelligence to the job.
