MUSAC swimmers put up national qualifying times at recent meets

Swimmers with the Muskoka Aquatic swim club (MUSAC) have posted some impressive times the past couple of weekends while hitting the water in Toronto and Orangeville.

Eastern Cup

The Eastern Cup was held on January 15-17 at the University of Toronto. More than 50 clubs from Quebec, Nova Scotia and Ontario were represented.

This was the swimmers’ first meet back after the holidays and as such was a test of strength and an opportunity to practice and strategize for races as they enter the competitive season.

The highlights for MUSAC were as follows:

Almost all of the swims were long course best times.

Nathan Stafford qualified for Eastern Nationals and Provincials in 200m Backstroke. He joins five other club members who previously qualified: Samuel Kuntz in Backstroke and Butterfly, Mitchel Cox in Freestyle and Backstroke, Emma Barnes in IM, Freestyle and Backstroke, Ally Goldring in Breaststroke, and Samantha Goldring in Breaststroke. Stafford also broke the club record in the 50m Fly.

Andrew Markham

Andrew Markham

Andrew Markham narrowly missed the Eastern National time and will have one last chance at the end of the month. His favourite race is the 200m Breaststroke

Mark Cox broke the club record in 100m Fly, 50m Fly and 200m Backstroke for 13-14 yr old males.

The Orangeville Winter Q Invitational meet was held on January 16

MUSAC swimmers accomplished the following:

Aidan Spiers made Regionals in 100m IM, 50m Free, and 100m Breast.

Owen Jibb achieved additional Regional times in 100m IM, 200m Breast, and 50m Free.

Catrice Black made Festivals in 200m Breast.

Ian Markham narrowly missed qualifying for Festivals in 400m Free by .03 seconds!

Will Dawes, Mia Pitts, and Nygel Blackmore also came very close to making Regional qualifying times.

The next major meet for the club is Short Course Regionals in Owen Sound from January 29-31. For Novice swimmers this is the highlight of their season. For more elite swimmers it’s an important meet for achieving qualifying times for this season’s Provincials and Nationals.
