Ciara Thompson has had her eye set on Miss Universe since the day she started pageants. This summer she will have the opportunity to compete and represent Canada at the world level when the Miss Universe Canada pageant is held in Toronto from August 11 to 18.
“I got accepted into this pageant two years ago but I took this time to grow as a person and prepare. I am definitely ready and more excited than ever,” said Thompson.
Although Thompson has competed in three pageants so far, this competition will be her biggest yet with over 60 women from across the country.
This pageant is the preliminary for the Miss Universe Pageant, which is the biggest and most well known in the world.
“With Miss Canada, I had to do a lot of my own events, advertising and preparation, and most of it was local,” said Thompson, “whereas with Miss Universe Canada it is a larger-scale event. For example, this will give me the connections to do charity work to do places all over the world like the Philippines as there is much higher funding.”
In each Miss Universe Canada pageant there is a charity that each delegate must support. The charity for 2018 is SOS Children’s Villages which offers safe and nurturing family homes to over 75,000 orphaned children in 134 countries around the world.
Thompson has various initiatives she plans to implement in order to raise money for the charity. She hopes to hold a gala early this summer at a Muskoka restaurant which will include entertainment and dinner.
Although she has yet to decide her other events, Thompson will be holding other fundraising events in order to raise money for SOS Children’s Villages.
Over the next year, Thompson also wants to devote herself to ending homelessness across Muskoka. She has already started plans for her own clothing company to raise money for homeless individuals.
“I want to get t-shirts made with prints of drawings, lyrics, poems, etc. all created by homeless individuals,” said Thompson. “The whole purpose is to humanize homeless individuals and show people that they’re talented. I want everyone to grow a more positive outlook on the homeless population.”
Proceeds from each shirt sale will be donated to a local charity that helps the homeless.
Thompson has recently set up her official Facebook page for Miss Universe Canada and is hoping to receive donations towards her projects. Interested sponsors can contact her through that page. Fans will also be able to vote for Thompson starting next month at missuniversecanada.ca
“I really want to inspire people to keep doing their best and try things they don’t think they could do,” said Thompson. “I’m going to keep trying my best to end the homelessness issue in Canada and winning this pageant will give me more connections to do so.”
