Mayor Aitchison continues recovery from rare sextuple heart surgery at home

The Town of Huntsville would like to inform residents that Mayor Scott Aitchison has been discharged from Southlake Regional Health Centre, and is now recovering from surgery in the comfort of his own home.

On July 31, the Town of Huntsville notified residents of Mayor Aitchison’s medical diagnosis and coronary angiogram procedure in Newmarket on August 2. Results of the procedure indicated that Mayor Aitchison required bypass surgery and would remain in medical care for observation. During surgery for a quadruple bypass on Tuesday, August 8 performed by Dr. Charles Peniston, the cardiac care team subsequently discovered additional blockages and a sextuple bypass was successfully performed. Dr. Charles Peniston, the head of Cardiac Surgical Care at Southlake Regional Health Centre confirmed that despite the severity of the blockages, there is no damage to Mayor Aitchison’s heart.

The Mayor is now recovering at home from the extensive and rare sextuple bypass surgery which required multiple incisions to his legs and arm where surgeons harvested veins and arteries.

Over the next 12 weeks of recovery the Mayor will be gradually increasing his daily activities to regain strength and increase his lung capacity as well as undergo cardiac rehabilitation with the support of the Algonquin Family Health Team.

The Mayor would like to thank his friends, family and constituents for all of their support, and looks forward to getting back to work.

I was shocked to hear that the chest pains that I was having resulted in major bypass surgery. I’m incredibly thankful that Dr. David Mathies and Dr. Jan Goosens were so quick to react to the signs, and I’m here to tell you that if you have exertional chest pains like I did, you must have it checked.

Don’t push yourself too hard, Scott – you can always record and send a video to the Mayor’s Golf Tournament rather than going in person. Rest and slow steps are the call of the day from now on until you are physician cleared.
