It was one of those once-in-a-million kind of days for Mary Ellen Hope. What started out as a fun game of golf with some lady friends turned into an extremely fun game of golf with a hole-in-one, an automatic win for closest to the pin and a door prize, to boot.
Mary Ellen’s hole-in-one, the first of her golfing career, game on the second hole of the Huntsville’s Downs course during their weekly Ladies’ Night event. As Mary Ellen describes it, she used her driver, hit the back side of the green and watched her ball roll into the cup. The hooting and hollering that ensued alerted everyone that there would be free beer back at the clubhouse.
Hole number two at the Downs is the most difficult of the par threes on the course. It is 141 yards from the reds and is rated a seven handicap. Since 2013 only two other people have recorded a hole-in-one there: Ray McEown and Jim Hyndman.
Club pro Vicki Hall presented Mary Ellen with a certificate and pin to mark her accomplishment. Mary Ellen was eager to get home and tease her family about her superior golfing skills. She is no doubt still enjoying telling the story.
