On October 29, 2022, members of the Mark’s Ride Scholarship team met to award Miranda Minassian Mark’s Ride Scholarship for 2022, the final year of this particular scholarship.

As many will know, this scholarship was created to celebrate the life of Huntsville lawyer Mark Reid, who passed away from cancer in 2015.

Mark’s wife Carrie Campbell, along with his son Sam Reid and close friend Tracey Christian, started this not-for-profit event in 2015, as a way to remember Mark’s love of the law and sport!

For the first few years, a bike ride was held through Algonquin Park. As a result of construction in the park, making permits for group rides difficult, the team pivoted to outdoor concerts at Carrie’s home. But as a result of COVID, the group events were put on hold and local business Soapstones Natural Skin Care has provided donations to continue to fund this scholarship.

This year’s scholarship recipient Miranda Minassian is a Muskoka local who was unsure if law school could be a reality for her. She started out as a journalist, however, law kept calling her name.

This year she begins her first year at law school in Ottawa, and after meeting her, Mark’s Ride team knows Miranda is going to excel in law and everything else she does!

Although Miranda did not know Mark, from her research she describes Mark as someone who used his position of power to elevate others and build community while nurturing foundational relationships. She is inspired to work in a rural setting, serving the local community and incorporating much-needed legal aid. Through Mark’s Ride Scholarship, $31,800 has been donated to local students since 2016.

The Mark’s Ride crew wants to thank everyone who donated funds, came out to ride, and joined in at the concerts.  There are so many to thank. And although this particular scholarship is wrapping up, it is only because Carrie Campbell and David McLean are going to create a joint effort in memory of their spouses, Mark Reid and Joanne McLean, to touch more students in varied pursuits.  Stay tuned for updates to come.
