Mark Cheek and Natasia Varieur win gold and silver for HHS at provincial championship

The Huntsville High School Nordic team wrapped up another successful season last week with a strong showing at the 2017 OFSAA Provincial Championship. Travelling to the Porcupine Ski Runners trail in South Porcupine, Ontario, the team competed in distance and relay events over two days with several distinguished finishes in the individual and team categories.

On day one, Para Nordic skier Mark Cheek won gold in the PN Standing Boys 2.5 km race with a time of 10:03.4. Junior girl Fiona Shearing finished sixth in the 4 km, while junior boy Owen Johnstone also came sixth. Senior girl Natasia Varieur was once again atop the OFSAA podium with a silver medal, her second in the last two years.

Overall team results saw the junior boys ‘A’ team of Owen Johnstone, Riley deGans, Cameron Heinz and Sebastian Horton come fourth, while a strong ‘B’ team of Keegan Chan, Aidan McClung, David Laughton and Colin Welsh finished 11th. The HHS senior girls team of Natasia Varieur, Marina Tusz, Madi Smrtka and Ainsley Herr placed fifth while senior boys Leif Bertelsen, Carson Pearse, Tommy Giblin and Owen Fedorowich came seventh.

Team sprint relays took place on the second day at OFSAA. HHS came incredibly close to the podium in three team categories, as the junior boys ‘A’, and senior girls and boys teams all finished fourth, while the junior boys ‘B’ team came tenth.
