Mamma Mia! Local students get creative for upcoming community musical

The Huntsville Festival of the Arts (HFA) has once again enlisted the creative talents of local students to help promote the upcoming musical it is presenting in partnership with the Rotary Club of Bracebridge.

Students from four area schools—Riverside, Pine Glen, Tawingo College, and Muskoka Christian School—gathered at Trinity United Church to create large-scale posters depicting scenes relevant to the show. Local artists Diane Thoms and Helena Renwick were on hand to offer artistic advice, but the designs were the students’ own.

“We enjoy bringing this educational component out to the students,” says HFA president Carol Gibson. “It’s a good learning experience for them.”

Students first created sketches using sources like Mamma Mia! images and travel books about Greece for reference. Once they had an idea that they were happy with, they began painting either solo or in pairs. They had just four hours to complete their work.

The paintings will be displayed in storefronts around town to help promote the upcoming shows. Mamma Mia! runs at the Rene Caisse theatre in Bracebridge from February 22-24 and February 28-March 2, and at Huntsville’s Algonquin Theatre from March 22-24 and March 28-31.

Regular tickets for Mamma Mia! can be purchased through each theatre’s box office, online or by phone at each theatre for prices of $30.00 for adults and $20.00 for students. Special prices (available only by calling the box office) are available for a family of four ($90) and for groups of 10 or more (only $20.00 per ticket). All prices are plus HST.
