Alpine Canada announced last week that local skier Ashley Campbell has been named to Team Canada Whistler Cup. Campbell is from Dwight and trains at The Georgian Peaks Club near Collingwood.
She earned a spot on the team as one of the top six athletes in her gender at the 2018 U16 Sport Chek National Championships held in Collingwood from March 6-10. There, Campbell placed first in two of four individual events—Super G and Giant Slalom—earning enough points to place fourth overall.
The only other Ontario skier on the team—Mackenzie Wood—also has ties to Huntsville. His grandparents, Marg and Peter Wood, live in the area. His second place Giant Slalom and third place Super Combined finishes, along with a seventh in Super G and ninth in Slalom, earned him third place overall for the men. He also trains at The Georgian Peaks Club. (In the image above, Wood is third from left in the back row.)
There are six women and six men on Team Canada Whistler Cup, supported by four of Canada’s top coaches under the mentorship of Alpine Canada’s Director of Domestic Sport, Dusan Grasic.
“The Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup is a great opportunity for young athletes to compete in their own backyard against peers at an international level,” said Grasic in a media release. “Whistler Cup has a deep history of showcasing some of the world’s best talent that is now competing at a World Cup level. Good luck to all the athletes and congratulations to the members of Team Canada!”
Campbell and her teammates will begin training April 8 for the Whistler Cup, which runs from April 12-15, 2018 at Whistler Mountain Ski Club in British Columbia. The Mackenzie Investments Whistler Cup has been running for more than 25 years.
