Local six-year-old continues to rise in snowcross competition

It’s not often you hear of a six-year-old competing in snowmobile races. But with the season drawing to an end, William Mulvihill, 6, continues to rise in points against competitors across the province in snowcross, closed course racing.

William, who won two gold medals in 2022, races in two categories in his age group, 120cc Stock 1 and 120 Pro 206 1, in the National and Regional Classes of the Canadian Snowcross Racing Association. He has already been awarded this year with two-fourth-place, one-third-place, and one-fifth-place medals. As of March 23, 2023, William maintained his fourth place in the Briggs Pro 206 and is ninth in 120cc Stock. There is still one race left at Horseshoe Valley on  April 1-2, 2023.

Under the careful guidance of his parents, William trains on a course his father, Jeff, who works in the recreational industry and is an avid sports enthusiast, maintains on their property near Port Sydney. “With the love of motorsports from a very young age, we entered William into the world of snowmobile racing in the winter of 2021, at the age of 4,” notes his father.

William, who attends Grade 1 at V.K. Greer Memorial Public School in Port Sydney, has loved snowcross racing ever since he can remember. William, a rambunctious and spirited young boy, with his keen interest in the sport, as well as the comradery of the snowcross community, finds racing really fun and thrilling.

“I like snowcross because it’s so cool and I like to do high jumps”, he says.

Training is the most fun, as it prepares him for man-made competition courses which feature jumps and corners that require kids to come up with different strategies to navigate and excel at. Riding a Yamaha SRX120R with a modified Briggs & Stratton 206cc motor, William can reach speeds of up to 40 kph. Snowcross participants are regulated to wear specific safety gear during races.

With his skill and zest for the sport, William has found generous local sponsors who support his racing activities like Prostreet Powersports, Tim and Liam Beckett in Huntsville, Choko Design, and Canuck Powersports. Also, William is working with the Kelly Shires Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds for the charity.

“William is currently racing in 2 classes in which he is in the top five in Ontario. His dedication and appreciation for the sport is certainly showing through results. We hope to finish the season on a high note as we have 1 remaining race left,” his father shares.

“Doesn’t matter what medal I get, I don’t get upset, whatever I get that’s okay. I’m just happy to race,” adds William of his love for the sport.  Readers are welcome to follow William’s racing progress on his Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/mulvihillracing
