The recent presentation at River Mill Park showcased the efforts of a real partnership in service by six local service clubs announcing a pledge of more than $6,000 to assist local schools in the fight against food insecurity.
Although that was well received by members and school officials, it was not the goal by Rotarian Peter Redwood and Kiwanian Rick Brooks, just considered a great start.
Brooks said, “Although we were excited to see the initial buy-in by the clubs, we knew that not all clubs could make the commitment before having board meetings and gaining the support of their members, so more is expected, and once we spoke with the grocery stores, we were hoping for their support too.”
Peter Redwood of the Rotary Club of Huntsville shared that including FreshCo, Metro and Bullock’s Independent Grocers, the partnership now has pledged $11,000.
The service club partners including Baysville Lions, Dorset Lions, Stephenson Lions, and Dwight Lions, along with the Rotary Club of Huntsville and Kiwanis Club of Huntsville Muskoka will be meeting with store managers over the coming week to formally present their pledges and at that time join with school officials to receive their gift cards.
Brooks suggested that the consensus among the clubs was that “although we were confident, we could make an impact, we had no idea of the extent of the generosity and to realize just how easy it was for us to put aside our differences as service clubs to bond together on the issue of children, was priceless.”
That thought was echoed by the entire group and one they would like to see continue.
