UPDATE: Muskoka Lumber and Cayman Marshall Realty will be matching donations, dollar for dollar (up to $5,000 each) for all donations made between the evening of Friday, August 6 until noon on Sunday, August 8. “We’re overjoyed by this and are excited to announce that every $1 donated will equal $3 for the next $5,000 coming in,” says Enliven board member, Cat Brown.
Scott Turnbull and Gavin Hammond are going to stretch their endurance to the limit on Saturday, August 7, and cycle 500 kilometres for 24 hours come rain or shine for a good cause.
They’ve been raising money for Enliven Cancer Care, an organization in Muskoka which aims to provide support for those with a cancer diagnosis as well as those who support them.
“As an Enliven Board member and part of the fundraising committee, I have been overjoyed and shocked by the amazing support they have received, and we can’t thank them enough for choosing to support Enliven,” wrote Cat Brown in an email to Doppler.
Team Scott and Gavin has already managed to raise more than $20,000 for the not-for-profit organization and they’re hoping others will step forward to keep the momentum going.
“Every year we try and set a fun goal or adventure for ourselves. This year it just got out of hand,” stated Hammond in an email to Doppler. “Both Scott and I have been closely affected by this brutal disease this year. We both believe that local initiatives are important and Enliven checked all the boxes. Our hope is by strengthening local organizations like this, it will have a positive ripple effect on the community.”
The pair will be starting and ending their ride at Windermere. They will cycle northwest to Parry Sound, then across to Sundridge, through Burks Falls, Emsdale, Sprucedale, Huntsville, Baysville, Bracebridge, Uffington, south of Gravenhurst, Bracebridge, Faulkenberg, Milford Bay, Raymond, and back to Windermere.
“The last 150km intentionally weaves back into Bracebridge a couple times and stays close to some safe spots in case we get into trouble,” added Hammond.
There’s a mixture of both nerves and excitement, said Hammond. “We’re so grateful for the support. We’re up to over 100 donations now which means that the word is getting out about Enliven. We’re just really excited to bring lots of eyes to this great organization. We’re very proud of the people like the board at Enliven who do such great work in our community that generally goes under the radar. It’s easy to do a big bike ride and get lots of attention but the end game is to bring to light all of the things that get done in this community without applause and fanfare.”
