When eight local runners crossed the finish line at the Canadian Cross Country Championships in Kingston on November 25, they did it as national champions.
The members of Muskoka Algonquin Runners, the local cross-country club, were part of two teams that beat out their counterparts from across the country to place first overall.
The Women’s 35-39 team of Lavinia Carreau, Darla Coles, Helen Dempster (running an age category below her own for the team) and Mary Unsworth finished in top spot, as did the Men’s 40-49 team of Jeramie Carbonaro, Troy Cox, Tony Marra and Mark Sinnige.
Two of the women were also crowned Canadian champions in their age categories — Mary Unsworth (35-39) and Helen Dempster (45-49). Carreau placed an equally impressive second place in the Women’s 35-39 category.
Don Gallagher (55-59) placed third in his age category, and Troy Cox and Jeramie Carbonaro placed 18th and 19th respectively in the full Masters 8K category.
